Who We Are
Welcome to AfricansOnTheMove
Africa's migration story is far richer than the headlines suggest. It is a story of resilience, enterprise, innovation, and global contribution.
Yet, for decades, it has been told largely through the lenses of crisis, conflict, irregular migration, and humanitarian response. While these realities deserve attention, they do not define the full African experience.
Across the continent and beyond, institutions such as the African Union (AU), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the United Nations Network on Migration (UNMN), governments, universities, and development partners continue to make invaluable contributions to migration governance and migrant protection. AfricansOnTheMove was established by concerned Africans to complement these efforts by addressing one fundamental question:
How can migration become one of Africa's greatest development advantages?
There has never been a more important time to answer that question. As migration policies become increasingly restrictive, visa inequalities continue to constrain African mobility, skilled professionals face mounting barriers despite global labour shortages, and new trends - from outsourced deportation to AI-driven border technologies - are reshaping how the world governs movement. Africa must not simply respond to these changes; it must help shape them.
AfricansOnTheMove brings together policymakers, researchers, practitioners, diaspora leaders, innovators, and development partners to generate evidence-based ideas that strengthen migration policy, unlock diaspora potential, improve mobility governance, and position migration as a catalyst for Africa's social, economic, and political transformation.
Our success will not be measured by the number of publications we produce, but by the policies we help shape, the partnerships we build, and the positive impact our ideas create across Africa and beyond.
Whether you are here to learn, contribute research, volunteer your expertise, collaborate, or partner with us, you are welcome. Building Africa's migration future requires the collective wisdom, commitment, and leadership of Africans everywhere.
I invite you to join us as we work to ensure that Africa is not merely part of the global migration conversation - but one of the voices leading it.
Welcome to AfricansOnTheMove.
